Preemie/newborn fancy hat

Another couple of hats I made for my friend's premature baby. I made these ones longer so they can be rolled up until she gets a bit bigger then they should fit when she reaches newborn size too. This one is a bit more fancy than the standard beanie hats I've made her, I thought it might be nice for her to have a bit of a dress up now and again :P

Gauge: at end of round 4, hat should have a diameter of 4". This should fit a head circumference of 12.5" which is around 31.75cms. Length when finished should be 6".

This hat is easily made bigger or smaller either by adding/taking off increase rows at the start or by using a bigger/smaller crochet hook.

You will need:
4.5mm crochet hook
3ply baby yarn
wool needle

1. make a magic ring, tutorial here, ch3, work 13dcs into the ring, join with sl st in top of ch 3 (14)
2. ch3, turn, dc in stitch at base of ch3, *2dcs in each st around*, join with sl st in top of ch 3 (28)
3. ch3, turn, dc in stitch at base of ch3, *dc in next st, 2dcs in next st*, join with sl st in top of ch 3 (42)
4. ch3, turn, dc in stitch at base of ch3, *dc in next 2sts, 2dcs in next st*, join with sl st in top of ch 3 (56)
5. ch3, turn, sk st at base of ch3 and next 2sts, *(2dcs in next st, ch1, 2dcs in same st - shell stitch), sk2sts, dc in next st, sk2sts* rep from *-* around till last 2sts, sk2sts, work 2dcs, 1ch, 1dc in st at base of ch3, join with sl st in top of ch3
6-13. ch3, turn, shell stitch in prev rows ch sp, dc in prev rows dc, rep till end, join with sl st in top of ch3
14. ch3, turn, 5dcs in prev rows ch sp, dc in prev rows dc, rep till end, join with sl st in top of ch3
15. bind off and weave in ends

Done :D
